Philip Samson, more commonly known as Outcast, is the immortal protagonist of the Outcast comic book series.
Born approximately 3,200 years ago to the Biblical figures Samson and Delilah, Philip is endowed with ageless immortality and a unique set of extraordinary abilities. His unnatural longevity and divine connection have left him isolated and weary, wandering the world as an outcast. He is perpetually bound to a divine will that, occasionally and involuntarily, teleports him to where he is "needed," forcing him into conflicts he struggles to understand.
Fundamentally heroic, Philip battles cynicism, anger, and doubt as he seeks to protect the innocent while questioning the purpose of his own existence.
Biography
Early Life
Born in the ancient world, Philip's existence as the immortal son of Samson and Delilah immediately set him apart. His mixed heritage and unnending life made him an outcast from his original, ancient society. Over his millennia-long life, he has witnessed (and often participated in) the rise and fall of empires, constantly struggling with his purpose.
At some point, likely soon after Christ's ascension, Philip was taught the "Shalom" trigger for his powerful Zenith Form and the rare ability of Logoscraft by Hinri, a manifestation of Jesus Christ.
Arc 1: Echoes of Giants (Warning: Spoilers)
Arrival in Aethelburg (Issues #1-2) In the year 2100, Philip is involuntarily teleported to the megalopolis of Aethelburg, Cyprus. He senses the "Nephilim's Reek," a foul psychic stain indicating a potent supernatural evil. This leads him to investigate a series of violent incidents caused by individuals briefly possessed by the disembodied spirit of Goliath.
His investigation brings him to the Aethelburg Grand Archive, where he meets the historian Dr. Eric Vance. Unbeknownst to Philip, Vance has been compromised by Goliath's covert influence and (speaking through / manipulating Vance) the evil spirit feigns a shared interest in ancient texts while, subtly, probing Philip's nature and weaknesses.
Manipulation and Doubt (Issues #3-4) Vance (influenced by Goliath) manipulates Philip, preying on his anger and isolation. He suggests ruthless methods and provides a lead on the "Iron Hands" organization, hoping to push Philip into a state of rage that will weaken his powers. Philip's aggressive confrontation with the Iron Hands confirms this, as he feels his strength drain.
During this time, Philip has a brief encounter with his old mentor, Hinri, who appears as a homeless man. Hinri offers a cryptic warning: "Be careful whose words you build your house upon," alluding to Vance's deception.
Goliath's plan escalates when he engineers a disaster at a Synth-Product Collective plant. Philip enters to save the workers but discovers the area is flooded with a grape-derivative hazard. To save a life, he is forced to touch a human corpse and expose himself to the substance, breaking two of his Nazarite Vows and becoming severely weakened. It is here he glimpses evidence on Vance's datapad linking the doctor to the incident, confirming his suspicions.
Confrontation and Climax (Issues #5-6) Philip confronts Vance at his penthouse. The scholar's attempts at gaslighting fail, and Goliath reveals his true identity and motive: millennia-old vengeance against Samson's line. Goliath takes full control of Vance's body, transforming it into a monstrously powerful form.
A brutal battle ensues. The weakened Philip is outmatched by Goliath's enhanced form. Pinned and about to have his dreadlocks cut, Philip desperately utters the word of Logoscraft "Ye'ee" to transmute the blade, neutralizing the immediate threat.
Realizing he cannot win with brute force, Philip focuses his will and uses his divine sword, Judgement, to attack Goliath's spirit directly. He successfully expels the Nephilim from Vance's body, causing the giant's spirit to dissipate and vow revenge.
The Zenith and The Void (Issue #6) With Vance collapsed and unconscious, Philip attempts to escape, only to be trapped by a building lockdown and Kylon Corp security forces. Overwhelmed and exhausted, he finds a moment of perfect emotional peace and utters the trigger word: "Shalom."
He enters his Zenith Form, radiating white-gold energy and becoming nigh-invulnerable. He effortlessly breaches all security and escapes. The form fades after a minute, leaving him utterly drained and vulnerable. As he recovers, he once again questions his unending, painful existence, only to be abruptly and involuntarily teleported away to an unknown location.
Personality
Philip is a brooding and weary individual, defined by centuries of loss and isolation. His long life has made him cynical, yet he remains morally grounded and possesses a deep, innate drive to protect innocents.
He struggles significantly with anger, doubt, and a sense of purposelessness. His powers, particularly the uncontrolled teleportation, are a constant source of frustration. Despite his immense power, he is fundamentally lonely, seeking connection but forever held apart by his nature.
Powers and Abilities
Philip's powers are divine in origin and are intrinsically linked to his emotional and spiritual state, particularly his adherence to his Nazarite Vows.
* Superhuman Attributes
-
Superhuman Strength: Philip possesses great strength, estimated at a baseline of 20 tons. This level can fluctuate, dramatically, based on his spiritual/emotional state.
-
Superhuman Durability: He is highly durable but can be wounded by sufficient force or advanced weaponry. Common lead bullets have been shown to have no effect on him.
-
Superhuman Stamina: Philip's stamina is limitless; he does not tire from physical exertion.
-
Superhuman Reflexes & Agility: He is far faster and more agile than any normal human; at his peak, being able to appear as a blur to most people and surveillance equipment.
* Divine Abilities
-
Immortality: Philip is ageless and cannot die by conventional means. Despite his advanced age, he appears as an athletic man in his prime. The precise reason for his immortality is unknown to him.
-
Accelerated Healing Factor: He can heal from most wounds at an accelerated rate. The speed of this healing is dependent on his current power level; he heals much slower when weakened.
-
Uncontrolled Teleportation: At the will of the "Spirit of God," Philip is involuntarily teleported across time and space to locations where he is "needed." This is a source of great frustration for him.
-
Nephilim's Reek: A unique sensory ability that allows him to detect the foul odor and psychic "stain" of potent supernatural evil that has fully manifested; such as the presence of Goliath when enhancing a possessed host.
* Power Scaling & Vows
Philip's power is directly tied to his purity of heart and mind, as well as his adherence to the three Nazarite Vows:
-
He must not cut his hair.
-
He must not consume any grape products (including wine).
-
He must not touch a human corpse.
Indulging in negative emotions (anger, vengeance) or breaking any of these vows causes his strength, durability, and healing to diminish significantly.
* Advanced Powers
-
Logoscraft: An extremely rare and potent ability to transmute inorganic matter by speaking an ancient word of creation: "Ye'ee" (meaning "Let there be"). This ability was taught to him by Jesus Christ. Its use is limited; by the end of Arc 1, he has only 5 uses remaining in his lifetime.
-
Zenith Form: A rare and temporary transformation triggered by achieving a state of perfect emotional peace, activated by the verbal trigger "Shalom."
-
Duration: Approximately 1 minute.
-
Abilities: Grants nigh-infinite strength and invulnerability.
-
Appearance: Radiates an intense white-gold energy.
-
Drawback: Causes extreme physical drain and exhaustion immediately afterward.
Equipment
-
Judgement: Philip's primary weapon. An impossibly sharp and durable sword made of tungsten carbide. Its origin is mysterious but likely divine (it appeared to him after reflecting on Luke 22:36). It was once the sword of the Biblical Goliath (as referenced in 1 Samuel 21:9). The blade is capable of harming both physical and spiritual entities.
Relationships
-
Goliath: The disembodied spirit of the Biblical giant and Philip's primary antagonist in Arc 1. As a Nephilim, he harbors a deep-seated hatred for Samson's line and seeks to corrupt and destroy Philip to regain his lost glory.
-
Hinri (Jesus Christ): A manifestation of Jesus Christ who appears to Philip as a peaceful, unassuming homeless man. He serves as a cryptic mentor, providing grounding wisdom. Hinri taught Philip the "Shalom" trigger and the ability of Logoscraft.
-
Dr. Eric Vance: A brilliant historian and Goliath's host during Arc 1. He used his intellect and position to manipulate Philip before being fully possessed. He was left unconscious and amnesiac after Goliath's expulsion.
-
Samson & Delilah: His Biblical parents. His heritage as the son of the "strongest man" and his ultimate betrayer is a source of his "outcast" status and internal conflict.
